Principal, Ms. Barbara Verdonck

In the Fall of 2020, encouraged by parents and concerns for our community in light of recent news events, I began a year of reexamining our mission to address issues of systemic racism, reviewing hiring practices and examining important issues that affect all of us like unconscious biases, inclusion and amplifying muted voices.

In October the faculty and I began internally with a day dedicated to Mission and assembling an Action Plan. Our first priority was the creation of a parent-led and faculty supported diversity and inclusion counsel. I’m happy to announce that the OLMC Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Council is now up and running with a brand new webpage on our site! The DEI team is already hard at work as they helped provide us with a wonderful speaker, Kendall Baldwin, at last week’s professional development day.

I thank them for the work they’ve already done and look forward to working with them on new projects! I encourage you to check out their site (see below) and join us in our efforts to amplify muted voices and celebrate the inclusion of people from all different backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic status and other ideologies!

It is a gift of the Holy Spirit and a blessing from our patroness Our Lady of Mount Carmel, that the launch of this new and important group falls on the first Day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. We are proud to stand with our Asian-American and expatriate Asian students and families as well as all our students and families from every color and creed and unequivocally condemn all forms of discrimination as we look forward to celebrating the rich tapestry of our cultural backgrounds in our classrooms and beyond! Check out the new webpage and more than ever, better than ever….We Are Mount Carmel!
