When my son was two years old, he started to get lots of bruises from the smallest bumps, and they took an unusually long time to heal. Although we were relieved that he was not diagnosed with something worse, Timothy had ITP: Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura. One evening, we found ourselves in the emergency room, and Timothy needed a blood transfusion. There was no time to find out his blood type, so the hospital used O- blood which is the universally accepted type and which is generally considered the safest for babies and young children.
