Students added six unknown solids to solutions to observe the substances’ chemical properties. They observed and recorded any signs of chemical reactions such as gas production, color change, and temperature change. Combining this information with their observations about the physical properties of the substances from an earlier investigation, they can now try to determine whether any two of the unknowns are the same, and whether they are elements or compounds.
