During this week’s art lesson, the 5th grade class learned about Alma Thomas (1891-1978), African American artist and teacher, whose abstract paintings were both mosaic and vibrant. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, and she exhibited her paintings at the White House three times. After learning about her and seeing a demonstration of her style, the students created some wonderful pieces of art!
