Issue: We are requesting increases in the State Budget for two areas that affect Catholic School and other Nonpublic School Families:

  1. An increase of AT LEAST $150.00 per pupil, which would increase the ceiling for nonpublic school transportation to AT LEAST $1,150.00 in order to provide opportunities for students to receive rides to school. Due to the CDC guidelines mandating decreased capacity on buses, it is difficult to get bids on nonpublic school routes at the current rate.
  2. An increase from $995.33 to $1,300.00 per service for compensatory education (remedial instruction in Math and Language Arts). The amount of $995.33 has been frozen since 2008. This freeze has caused a reduction in services to nonpublic school students.

Our Position: Increases to these accounts are greatly needed by Catholic School and all nonpublic school children whose parents save the taxpayers of New Jersey a great deal of money every year. Nonpublic schools, which remained open for in-person instruction during the pandemic, have seen an increase in enrollment. This in-person instruction was vital, especially to the students in underserved communities, to keep them from being left behind.
